HVAC units are a “set it and forget it” luxury for most people until something happens that requires a professional. Many of these issues can be avoided with regular maintenance, and fortunately, these projects are easy to do yourself.
As a homeowner, it is common to schedule annual appointments with an HVAC technician who will inspect your system and make sure it operates at peak performance. Between these visits, you can do a quick run-through yourself and help keep everything working smoothly.

DIY HVAC Inspection

If you want to save on HVAC inspection costs or learn more about the intricacies of your home, you can conduct an HVAC inspection yourself. It’s a straightforward process, and with the right tools, it should only take a few hours.

Thermostat

This is your starting point, as it is the brains of the whole operation. It is also the most accessible component to inspect and should be a relatively quick procedure.

Batteries and Heating/Cooling

If your thermostat is battery-powered, now is the time to check on its charge. Typically, these batteries can last up to two years, so replace or recharge if it is nearing that time.

Although you would notice if there was no heat in the winter and no cooling in the summer since you are doing an inspection, test these functions to make sure that they work. Each setting should come on quickly, and if there is a long delay, this should be mentioned to your HVAC professional, as it could signify an issue.

Heading Outside

Most residential HVAC systems are a “split system,” which means that some of your components are indoors, and some are outdoors. For example, the HVAC systems compressor will be located outdoors, next to the house. It is a large, square machine sitting on a concrete slab.

Before any work is done, turn off the power to the indoor and outdoor unit using the on/off switch or the breaker.

Cleaning the Compressor

With outdoor compressors, debris such as dirt, dust, and leaves can build up around them and get into the grates. It can also clog the drainage and reduce airflow, which will impact the performance of your HVAC system. You want to give your compression two to three feet of clearance on all sides, so remove any debris and clean up the area.

After you have finished cleaning the perimeter, you can remove the fan cage. This will allow you to clean inside the machine using a shop vac. Vacuum up any dirt and debris, then move on to cleaning the fins.

Clearing the Fins

The fins of the compressor are located on the side and look like a metal grate with vertical slots. These provide airflow and move heat away from the HVAC system. If they are dirty, clogged with debris, or bent out of shape, this will reduce the airflow and the system efficiency.

Using a hose and sprayer can clean the machine from the inside, blowing any grime outwards. If the fins are bent, you can use a fin comb to straighten them out. If you do not feel comfortable with this step, you can ask your HVAC tech to straighten out the fins for you on their next inspection, as they will have the correct tools.

Leveling the Unit

Because the concrete slab will be sitting on the ground, it can shift and move over time. If your compressor is not level, this can disrupt the refrigerant and oil that moves through the system, leading to some costly repairs. Use a level to check that your machine is sitting flat, and if minor adjustments need to be made, use rot-resistant shims.

Indoor Inspection

Inside your home are the furnace and evaporator, though you will not have a separate furnace component if you have a heat pump. These are located in your attic, basement, or utility closet.

Before you do any inspecting, you must turn off the power and the AC.

Cleaning the Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil uses refrigerant to remove heat from the air before it circulates throughout your home. The evaporative coil is in the access panel of the air handler unit, and you will need to remove the screws and panel to access it.

Once exposed, check to see if it is dirty. A dirty coil can become clogged or frozen, and it is essential to clean it to prevent this from happening. You will need to use a special cleaner made for cleaning coils, and it is recommended to go with a no-rinse foam cleaner that you spray on and leave.

Cleaning the Evaporator Drain

During hot days, the evaporator coil can produce a large amount of water, up to gallons per day during peak summer use. Check that the drain is free of dirt and debris, using a shop vac to clean the area if needed. When finished, reattach the access panel.

Finishing Up

The final touches to your DIY HVAC home inspection are to replace the air filters. Regularly changing these filters is the single best thing you can do for the air quality of your home and its efficiency. These can become clogged with dust and air pollutants, restricting the airflow and their ability to filter.

HVAC filters should be changed every three months, depending on the type, but changing these monthly can make a difference if you have pets or severe allergies. There are many types of filters with different ratings, from HEPA filters to the more common MERV-rated filters.

What is a MERV Rating?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values and signifies the filter’s ability to capture particles between .3 and 10 microns. Many HVAC systems use MERV filters, and for residential properties, the standard rating is MERV 6 or MERV 8. For comparison, hospitals often use a MERV 14 to MERV 18, but this will significantly reduce airflow in a typical residential HVAC system.

Conclusion

Now that your DIY HVAC inspection is complete, you can rest assured that your system is running efficiently!

It’s time to say goodbye to monotony and hello to sustainability and color. These inclinations were all about a sparse, medically clean space filled with a hyper-awareness to the lack of color. Almost edging on fearful design, these styles played out like replications of one another, echoing in a slightly off-kilter chasm, reproducing nearly imperceptible differences.
Fortunately, the days of living in a sterile vacuum seem to be over as we come into 2022. As if seeing color for the first time, this new approach to design is overwhelming the senses in a feast of visual delight. Wherever the eyes land, there’s another overflowing plate to devour, and we have been starving. Let your imagination run free this year as we dive into retro design, pastel palette cleansers, and say au revoir to minimalist fasting.

Saying Goodbye to Minimalism

With years of minimalist modern style slowly backing away, the interior design scene is now focused on adding more color and individuality. The sparse black and white story that minimalism tells has become old news, and the trend is focused on creating an inviting sanctuary that beckons warmth, comfort, and contrast.

This bold eclecticism is a welcome reprieve from the white-on-white palette of Ikea-saturated yesteryears. Striking a beautiful chord with those who prefer more than a light touch of color, there’s no limit to the possibilities as we venture into 2022. Wild floral wallpaper paired with a royal blue floor-ceiling bookcase, nestled behind an olive-green suede sofa and gold end table, creates a Matties-inspired living room. These are the inspirations we have been yearning for and can finally act out with acceptance.

While the minimalist design has its time and place, we feel a universal calling to create a more naturally inspired and vivid homescape. Let’s bring some of that natural world indoors with colors and patterns that appreciate the untamed cohesion between the many natural elements that make up our bold and beautiful reality.

Modern Farmhouse meets Mid-Century Avant-Basic

Farmhouse style has its unique chapter in the interior design world, coming from a place of homely comfort and rustic style. So easy to shop for, you can find these pieces everywhere, from weekend flea markets to high-end design stores. But when one thing goes on unchanged for too long, the viewer becomes restless. In 2022, we welcome a commingling of Farmhouse with Avant Basic, the trend taking over social media with its pastels, patterns, and curvy shapes.

Considered a maximalist design, the story here is one of visual abundance -a collection of highly dynamic situations all brought together under one roof. This layered masterpiece involves a fearlessness to be bold and incorporates colors that dance from one end of the spectrum to the other, grabbing bold patterns and lush fabrics to finish off the look.

The glue holding this eclectic style together is the application of pattern-heavy wallpaper. For those who aren’t looking for a weekend project, stick-and-peel will become your new best friend. To do this right, focus on wavy designs and stay away from recognizable shapes, and do so in dynamic, contrasting pastels. Then, pair your paper with mustard yellow furniture, baby pink accent walls, and soft blue cabinets for the ultimate Farmhouse-meets-Avant Basic approach.

Embracing Retro Style

The 70s are back, baby! The Retro Home design style is popping up all over the place, from influencer homes to interior design magazine covers. The flare for the wild, bold, and geometric is sweeping the new year, and you will find plenty of throwbacks in the colors, patterns, and eclectic pieces.

This nostalgic yearning for design elements that stand out has resulted in a colorful display of rich purples, soft velvet upholstery, and a bold mix of metallic accent pieces. Rattan reading chairs settled next to a lush violet love seat, coupled with curvy coffee tables and brass overhead lighting, set the stage for this year’s disco-vibes comeback. Don’t forget the upgraded hardware when redesigning a space, as this will put the finishing touches on your beautiful new design. Polished nickel and aged brass go with 70s revival like the Bee Gees and Marvin Gaye.

When it comes to color, imagine burnt orange, deep purple, avocado green, and sunrise yellow. Paired with natural wood, this relaxing but uplifting color palette creates the perfect mood for unwinding as well as entertaining. In addition, vintage accent pieces are invited into modern homes, and the yin-yang of these two styles creates a charming balance.

Coming Back to the Natural World

We say, “coming back,” but have we really ever left? While natural stone can be seen in countertops throughout the modern design, the trends of 2022 have us fully embracing all things natural. Objects made from vein-streaked marble, raw natural wood, and organic, earthy elements like clay are on-trend for 2022.
As ecologically friendly and sustainable methods continue to be embraced, there’s an awakening to the detrimental effects of fast-industry products. These products are created using manufactured synthetics and end up in landfills after a few short years of use due to their low quality and inability to be recycled. These lamps, tables, chairs, beds, etc., do not offer the unique style or durability that designers can find in custom-made goods using natural products.
The trend for 2022 is to utilize authentic, handmade, and naturally based interior objects to create a home full of individuality and sustainable materials. We no longer want to walk into a home that looks like a hundred other homes we have been inside. As the work-from-home movement has settled and we are spending more time in these spaces, the drive for a comfortable and unique environment has risen.
The current opinion is that faux-anything, whether plants, chairs, or finishes, feels tacky and insincere. It lacks the attention to detail that is inseparable from genuine interior design. In an age of social media influence, the trend is to stand apart from the rest and imbue a house with dynamic features that will stand the test of time.

When searching for a new home, one of the first questions regarding the bathroom is, “What kind of tub is there?”. The bathtub is also a significant consideration in home renovation with many styles, colors, materials, and shapes.
As a symbol of luxury and comfort and contributing a significant design element, freestanding tubs are a worthwhile investment. Read on to learn more about what bathtubs are dominating the market in 2022.

The Styles of Bathtubs

The first question you want to ask yourself is what you plan to use your bathtub for, long, luxurious evening soaks? Muscle relaxation and recovering after intense workouts? Romantic bubble baths with your partner? Something to stand in while taking a shower? The answers to these questions will help define what kind of tub will work best for your situation.

Single and Double Ended Tubs

A single-ended tub has one sloped end while the other is where all the faucet and drain hardware are installed. This is great for one person and what you will usually find installed in homes today. They range from 48″ to 70″ and have predrilled holes for your faucet hardware.
A double-ended tub has two rounded ends, making it great for sharing a bath. The drain is located in the center, and the faucet will be freestanding, so you can choose where the water comes in. These are built a bit larger, at 55″ to 72″, and this style gives you more flexibility with the tub placement, as it lacks the predrilled faucet holes.

Single and Double Slipper Tubs

Similar to single and double-ended tubs, what sets this style apart is that it provides more height on the relaxing end. Getting its name from its resemblance to a woman’s slipper, these high-backed tubs offer more comfort and support. Because of the additional height, these are the perfect choice for taller people.
They have the same setup and configuration as the single and double-ended tubs regarding drain and faucet location.

Clawfoot Tubs

This is the style that we all know and love, commonly found in Victorian homes and showcased as the “luxurious” option. The classic clawfoot has been a prominent feature dating back to the mid-1800s and was initially made in cast iron and then covered in porcelain. Modern versions can now be found in the lighter-weight acrylic, making transport and installation much more manageable.
Clawfoot tubs come in many styles and colors, including the single and double-ended and slipper varieties. In their cast-iron form, these tubs can last a long time with minimal upkeep. They are often used in a tub/shower combo, with a shower curtain hung around them from a pole suspended from the ceiling.

Japanese Soaker Tubs

In Japan, many homes have separate rooms for bathing, which is an essential aspect of their everyday routine. Smaller than the average tub but with much higher walls, Japanese soaker tubs make up for the lack of horizontal space by allowing you to soak up to your neck. In addition, these often have temperature control features, which keep the water hot for longer. Finally, these are commonly more circular than the typical oblong shape, with the drain located in the center.
This is an excellent option for those with a smaller bathroom but who really want to enjoy the tub experience. They often come with covers, as the water isn’t meant to be drained every time, keeping things warm. Because these tubs are meant for soaking more than bathing, taking a shower beforehand is recommended. Given their small size, using them as a tub/shower combo is often not feasible.

Tub Materials

There is more to it than just aesthetics when choosing your bathtub construction material. Weight, durability, size, and heat retention all come into play.

Acrylic

This is one of the most popular construction materials for bathtubs due to its durability, malleability, weight, and customization options. In addition, because acrylic is non-porous, it is resistant to staining and scratches, and any damage can be fixed quickly and inexpensively.
Because they are lightweight, they can be installed above ground level without reinforcing the floor. Acrylic tubs can be made in many shapes, sizes, and colors and offer unlimited customization potential. They are also one of the lowest cost freestanding tubs on the market, yet they rank low in heat retention.

Cast Iron

Cast iron tubs are known for their beautiful style, fantastic heat retention properties, and extensive weight. If you are looking for a classic style and long-lasting durability, this is the place to start. They are heavily resistant to scratching and chipping, but it is more expensive to repair than acrylic if damage does occur. Cast iron tubs will elevate the aesthetic of your bathroom and become a focal point for the design.

Copper

Copper tubs are not commonly found in the United States, but they offer a distinct, elegant appeal with great flexibility in design. Known as a “living finish,” copper interacts with the environment and will organically deepen in color over time. As their tone darkens, they form their own personality, which means that no two tubs are alike. This is perfect for those looking for a unique appeal.

Copper tubs have excellent heat retention properties, as the walls will hold heat longer than other materials. Also, because copper is naturally resistant to mold and bacteria, these are an excellent choice for those with compromised immune systems.

Solid Surface

With a mix of natural and synthetic resins, solid surface tubs can be poured and molded into virtually any shape and size. This gives you infinite options for your freestanding tub and an excellent choice for smaller bathrooms or those working with unique layouts. With excellent heat retention and resistance to stains, mold, and mildew, solid surface tubs are a worthwhile investment. While not the cheapest option, their customization more than makes up for it.

Filling Your Tub

With any tub that you choose, there are going to be many options for faucets and drains. From the standard wall-mounted spout to freestanding spouts that hang over your tub’s side, the designs are endless. With an array of materials, colors, and shapes, depending on the predrilled holes of your tub, you will be able to customize your bathtub down to the knobs.

These fabulous wall storage and display designs will transform your home into an inviting and artistic sanctuary.
Empty wall space can make your home feel open and uninviting, especially if you have bright white walls. Filling that space will create a more welcoming aesthetic and allow you to show off your artistic sensibilities. To learn more about the perfect way to spruce up those empty walls, take a look at our list below.

Hang Some Shelves

Installing shelves is the most practical and popular way to fill empty wall space. They give you unlimited options when it comes to how you want to decorate and can be used in a multitude of ways. For example, if you have an extensive book collection, organize them by size or color to create a charming visual impression. As a popular trend over the past few years, arranging books by color will create a beautiful display.

For those with smaller spaces, wall shelves can hold baskets and bins full of electronics, art supplies, and other items you need to find a place for. Picture frames, trinkets, and collectibles also look great resting on a shelf. This gives you the chance to reduce clutter and open up the floor space by moving things to the empty walls.

In the kitchen, wall shelves can be used in conjunction with hooks to hang pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils. Showcase your favorite cookbooks on top for a well-rounded display. If you are an avid tea or coffee drinker, you can hang your favorite mugs while displaying your drinkables in ceramic containers on top.

In the bathroom, you can use wall shelves to hold toiletries, candles, and bath bombs and hang your towels beneath. They are also great for keeping plants away from your pets while still enjoying the natural aesthetic and cleaner air they provide.

Adjustable Shelves

Adjustable shelves are the kinds you often see in kitchen panties and bedroom closets. These allow for easy customization, as you can freely move them up and down. In the closet, adjustable shelves expand your storage capabilities and improve organization.

While they have a more industrial look than standard hanging and floating shelves, this works well with certain types of interior design. You can also paint them to blend in with the wall color, or install them in closets, garages, and basements, to provide extra storage options.

Built-in Cabinets

Built-in cabinets provide a classy, refined look to any room in the house. They are a great way to build out an entertainment center, with the tv as the focal point. They also work well in the bedroom and home office, providing ample opportunity for display and storage.

With open shelves on top and cabinets on the bottom, you can display your favorite pieces and keep specific items out of sight. In addition, they are not hard to install and can be a fun weekend project for any DIY enthusiast.

Make sure to spread out the weight of your items and decor so that one side does not feel heavier than the other. This will improve the visual effect.

Perfect for displaying books, plants, candles, picture frames, and décor, built-in cabinets give you plenty of flexibility. If your room is full of whites and neutral shades, you can use this as an opportunity to add color to the space. For example, arrange a collection of books by color, creating a fabulous artistic element.

Wooden Crates

Natural wooden crates contribute a farmhouse design vibe, but they can be used in any interior design style if painted white. Similar to shelving, they have the added advantage of a framed shelf that draws in the eye. In addition, anything placed inside the box will have more prominence than what you display on the top portion. Having these different options is what makes wooden crates such a popular choice.

They are also straightforward to hang, as you can install them anywhere that has a stud or by using anchor bolts. Finally, for added visual appeal, you can add wallpaper or fabric to the inside and really make this wall shelving option pop.

Wall Hung Credenza

A wall-hung credenza offers practical and beautiful storage options. Any credenza can be hung this way, as long as you find a stud or use anchor bolts that can support the weight. Hanging your credenza makes cleaning much more manageable and helps the room feel larger.

When using a credenza for storage, you have plenty of space available both on top and within the cabinets. In addition, because credenzas come in so many styles, colors, materials, and sizes, the options are endless when considering their impact on your interior design aesthetic.

In the living room, a credenza can be used to hide tv cords, routers, and video game systems, while also allowing easy access. Framed beneath a hanging tv, this is a modern upgrade that can significantly enhance a room.

Floor to Ceiling Bookcase

A floor-to-ceiling bookcase creates a significant design impact and can drastically change the feel of a room. It will make the space feel taller while also adding many unique opportunities for display. With so many shelves to fill and the height differences adding to the visual appeal, this is an attractive option for filling empty wall space.

You can add colorful interest to a room by adding trinkets, plants, and books. You can also play with the empty space by arranging things vertically and horizontally. The shelves do not have to be at the same level all the way through, and you can create variations within the shelf heights and widths, which will give a more dynamic appeal.

A floor-to-ceiling bookcase does not have to go wall-to-wall and can look great framing an open doorway. With shelving on each side and running across the top, this design trick will bring your eye upwards and lift the room. Using the bottom shelves as storage with bins and baskets, you can fill the top area with colorful décor.

When it comes to a kitchen remodel, your countertop will be one of the most important decisions you have to make. However, the color you choose can set the mood for the entire kitchen and create cohesiveness between appliances, flooring, and other aspects.
Countertop materials come in various colors and shades, from cherry wood to gray concrete to black marble with blue veining. Deciding on the best material for your kitchen design will be the first step. Next will come color, which depends on your design style, fixtures, and color choices for the rest of the space.

Flecked or Veined (Stone)

As one of the most popular countertop materials, stone offers a depth and uniqueness that helps elevate the charm and sophistication. What contributes to its allure are the flecks and veining that run throughout. There are two factors to consider when choosing a stone countertop: the color of the stone and the color of the flecks and veining. These two factors will play into each other and the overall dynamic of the space. For example, a dark stone with broad patches of veining will not feel as overwhelming as a solid black countertop. The same can be said of white stone with deep blue veining.

White Stone

White stone with gray marbling is trendy in modern homes and creates a sense of calm and cleanliness that goes well with other color schemes. In addition, the bold white will enrich earthier tones throughout the kitchen, such as natural wood floors, while keeping things from feeling outdated. The veining comes in many shades and colors and can be matched to the cabinetry or wall color or stand on its own as a focal piece without dominating the space.

Soft white with gray/blue veining is an excellent choice when paired with brass accents and is commonly found in modern and traditional homes. This color combination makes a space feel bigger without being overpowering and will softly reflect natural light.

Dark Stone

Stones in darker colors, such as black and green, do best in kitchens where the primary color is white. A black stone with white veining looks impeccable when paired with white cabinets. A darker-colored stone countertop easily hides crumbs while maintaining that same sophisticated aesthetic as lighter-toned slabs. Alternatively, a darker slab stone with thick white veins traversing can be paired with darker cabinets. The white veins can provide enough contrast to keep the kitchen from feeling gloomy.

Brown (Wood)

Wood is a classic choice and goes well with many colors and materials in the kitchen. Serious chefs will often use wood as their countertop material, as it has the same visual appeal as a large butcher block. Warm wood tones are inviting and have a natural richness that is hard to replicate. If you are looking to add some rustic charm, want to make your kitchen feel more “homey,” or need to balance out stark white cabinets, wood tones are an excellent choice.

Lighter woods will have a more rustic feel when compared to darker stains. While they don’t hide imperfections as well, they do elevate the mood of a space, and their yellow tones will feel warmer than darker woods.

Darker shades will feel more formal, especially when paired with white cabinets in a traditional kitchen. However, if your kitchen has large windows and lets in plenty of light, these are a great way to balance out the space and keep it from feeling washed out.

Cherry and reddish-brown hues will make your kitchen feel warmer, while light and yellow woods make your space feel brighter.

Pure White Countertops

Pure white countertops are a bold choice and one where the color palette for the rest of the kitchen will make a significant impact on the overall aesthetic. A white countertop is a crisp addition in modern spaces, especially in a small kitchen. An all-white kitchen feels clean and bright and will make brass and bronze accent features stand out. For this reason, it is essential to consider the finishings, such as handles and pulls, light fixtures, and faucets, as you don’t want your room to feel cold and sterile.

Pure white countertops also do well when they have another color to work with, such as cabinets painted in royal blue or black. In addition, installing a pure white countertop gives you the flexibility to be bolder with other color choices, as the white will keep tones from feeling overwhelming.

Gray Countertops

One of the best features of gray countertops is allowing other aspects of the kitchen to take the lead. This is why you will often find them in architecturally detailed homes, as concrete countertops provide strength and foundation that reinforces other design elements.

When paired with creamy-white cabinets, these shades complement each other without overpowering. A soft-flecked gray stone works well in highly-detailed homes and contemporary kitchens. Gray is the most neutral countertop choice and adds a harmonious look with metal finishes, such as gold, brass, and silver.

Black Countertops

A rich black countertop can be the focal point you need in a kitchen with white cabinets. This is especially true if you choose a dark stone slab with light veining. Stainless steel, brass, and nickel finishes pop from black quartz countertops, and this palate will create a refined and sophisticated ambiance. Cherry wood tones will be accentuated by a black countertop, whether walnut cabinets or redwood flooring.

When deciding on the best countertop color for your kitchen renovation, considering the overall design and aesthetic is the most crucial factor. How do you want to feel when you walk into the kitchen? Are you looking to create a comfortable, relaxed environment, or one that is sophistical, clean, and bright? These answers will go a long way in determining the best color for your countertop.

Style and originality take over in 2022. Flooring trends ripple with excitement as bold colors, patterns, and sustainable materials take hold.

With the year underway and spring around the corner, there’s no better time than the present to renovate your home. One of the best ways to make a dramatic change that can elevate your home is by upgrading the flooring. We see new trends in colors, styles, and materials every year, and 2022 is no different. To help you begin this fun project of choosing new flooring, we have laid out all the top flooring trends taking the industry by storm.

Materials

Vinyl

When vinyl flooring made its debut in 1933, it was considered a budget-friendly and resilient material. Unfortunately, it was also not that attractive. As technology has advanced, so has Vinyl’s appearance, and it now looks and feels nearly indistinguishable from stone and natural wood. Along with these visual upgrades, it has kept its budget-friendly affordability and ease of installation. In 2022, more and more homeowners are taking on renovations themselves, and Vinyl is an excellent option for a DIY approach.

Tile

Tile is most commonly found in the kitchen and bathroom and has long been a popular flooring choice. Its appeal has certainly not waned over the years, as it remains at the top of the list for attractive flooring options in 2022. Offering plenty of flexibility and creativity, you can find tiles in many colors, styles, sizes, shapes, and materials.

Matching tile colors to wallpaper and nearby furniture has come into play this year. And in bathrooms, rather than stopping at the wall, designers are covering an accent wall in the same floor tiles for an additional pop of color and texture.

Laminate

Laminate flooring is the go-to option for those looking for a less expensive and easier to install choice over hardwood flooring. Providing a level of water resistance, stain resistance, and plenty of textures and colors, Vinyl is a DIY’ers dream. Real estate experts and interior designers agree that laminate flooring is an excellent way to increase home value while offering a less expensive installation than hardwood, tile, and stone.

Sustainable Flooring

Hardwood and Bamboo

Bamboo flooring will be right up your alley for those who are serious about sustainability. Fast-growing and self-regenerating, bamboo can be harvested yearly without significant environmental repercussions. It is also twice as hard as traditional hardwood floors, can be installed over concrete and works well in all climates. The bamboo trend for 2022 is rigid core bamboo, a combination of bamboo and stone polymer composite. This coupling amplifies bamboo’s benefits and is perfect for high-traffic areas.

Reclaimed Wood

Distressed wood floors contribute character and warmth to any room in a home. They evoke feelings of country charm while staying true to the modern appeal of 2022. The most popular styles and colors are two-toned wide planks, usually in a whitewash to give that antique feel. Because they are reclaimed, they have plenty of personality, and you will not have to worry about wear and tear, scratches, or damage from furniture and water.

Carpet

Carpet flooring is commonly found in bedrooms and living areas, rooms where comfort is key. Although carpet has been replaced by hardwood flooring over the past few years, it has started to make a resurgence. It provides a warmer, softer aesthetic, and 2022 sees patterned carpets with a neutral color making a comeback.

The best thing about carpet is the infinite options you have to choose from in style and color and in material and texture.

Shag

As surprising as it may be, shag carpets are making a big comeback in 2022. As a staple of the 70s, shag offers uber-comfort, but the big difference in 2022 is that the bold colors popular in that art-deco decade have stayed in the past. Instead, stick to grays and creams with subtle patterns for a more modern twist.

Colors

Gray, White, and Dark Stains

Gray-stain flooring goes well with white cabinets and modern furniture for modern and contemporary rooms. It also keeps a space feeling light and airy without being too bright.

White stains create a bright and uplifting vibe, great for the kitchen and bathroom. They also do well in rooms that do not have many windows or are low on natural light. Dark stains remain a popular choice, as they are less likely to fade and lend a classic, mid-century modern aesthetic.

Cerused

This wood technique enhances the natural details and character of wooden flooring, increasing its visual appeal. The wood grain is made darker or lighter than the other wood parts, contributing to dynamic color contrast. Very popular in the 1500s, they have made a comeback, and we will see this style celebrated in more homes in 2022.

Patterns

Wide Planks

Wide planks are overtaking thin planks in popularity, as they make a room feel more relaxed and organized. Rather than having hundreds of narrow planks of varying colors and shades, wide planks give uniformity to a room.

Chevron and Herringbone

Over the last few years, these artistic designs have been trending as the modern design style took hold. They add charm and sophistication to a room without overshadowing the other elements. In addition, these patterns can be appreciated in various materials and give plenty of room for exercising artistic freedom with size, shape, and direction.

Geometric and Floral

Simple and boring flooring is out, geometric and floral patterns are in! Bathrooms and kitchens bloom with artistic expression, from large floral tiles to artistically styled geometric designs. Honeycomb tile is replacing subway for backsplashes; Mosaic tiles are weaving patterns beneath kitchen islands; bathroom floors are layered in penny tile, which gives an excellent underfoot feel.

2022 is the year of expression, and this is especially true in flooring. Many of the popular trends of the past five years stay true to their power while also experiencing a comeback of long-avoided styles (i.e., shag). So now is the time to get creative with your flooring and choose the best materials, styles, and colors to fit your lifestyle and aesthetic without holding back!

This guide will help you figure out the best sofa for your needs and style. Comfort and compatibility go hand-in-hand when sofa shopping.

One of the most challenging shopping purchases is deciding on a new sofa. Even if you can try out everyone, how many people bring a bowl of popcorn and Netflix to the furniture store? Next to the bed, the sofa sees more action than any other piece of furniture. Not only do we want to feel completely comfortable and relaxed, but we also want something stylish that fits in with our home’s aesthetic.

Most people will not have the time to drive to a dozen furniture stores to try out every piece they are interested in. To narrow down the list, you need to be clear on what style, size, and color you are looking for. These factors will save you time and guesswork and bring you one step closer to finding that perfect sofa.

Sizing

Size is a significant factor for many different reasons. You want to consider how many people you expect to sit in your living room at once and how you plan to use it. For example, are you more of a “stretch out, feet up, afternoon napper” type, or a “lean back kick your feet up on the ottoman” relaxer? If you are tall, you will want to consider a more extended sofa and possibly even a taller sofa.

Along with personal preference, consider the size and angle of doorways. The worst thing is finding that perfect piece after searching for weeks only for it to not fit through the opening. To ease this fear, measure everything along the way from the front door to where the sofa will finally come to rest. This includes doorways, hallways, stairwells, and exterior and interior obstructions.

Who’s Using the Sofa?

If you have kids or pets, you will want to look for different fabrics than if you lived alone. The amount of wear and tear a sofa can handle is heavily based on the materials that cover the frame. Cats are known to scratch at the corners, using it as their grooming station, while kids will jump all over the place and break it in. A sofa is one of the more expensive pieces of furniture in a home, and you want to make sure it will last a long time.

Upholstery

Durable materials such as microfiber and canvas are long touted as the best options for pets and children. They are made up of powerful fibers and will handle the abuse that comes with years of bouncing around. Leather is also very durable and a popular option for people with pets and kids. Along with its long lifespan, it is also notoriously easy to clean and hard to stain.

The cheaper the fabric, the more prone it will be to stretching and straining. Upholstery typically has a rub-count rating, a machine-based test that rubs back and forth over the fabric until it wears down. 50,000 count is the standard, with 100,000 considered premium. Most residential fabric rub counts of about 25,000 are acceptable for light use, but again, with kids and pets, you will want to look for something significantly higher.

When you are sofa shopping, don’t worry if you find the perfect sofa in the wrong fabric or color. You can request fabric samples from many sofa companies for the colors and materials you are interested in. Seeing and feeling these before purchasing is a much better option than imagining what it would be like through a photo. You can use this to see how the sofa would look in different lighting conditions and how it feels against your skin when taking a nap.

Frame Quality

An often underlooked aspect, the frame is just as important as any other feature. The quality of the wood supports and springs will affect how long it last and age. Most frames are made of engineered wood like MDF or particleboard, but these cheap materials will not survive in the long run. Instead, search out sofas made of furniture-grade plywood, hardwood, and solid wood. Different joint techniques will also improve durability, such as mortise-and-tenon joints. The fewer staples and less glue used, the better.

Cushions

Sofas come in various styles, and these are usually determined by the shape of the frame, the height of the back, and the style of the cushion. For example, do you want a soft, nap-friendly cushion that will feel like resting on a cloud? Or do you prefer a firmer cushion that will support you while you entertain company? Most sofas on the market come in four options: poly-wrapped foam, goose/duck down, innerspring core, and memory foam. Each one has a distinct feel, longevity, and comfort level, so try each one before choosing. Knowing which fill material you like best will significantly narrow down your search.

Another consideration is how many cushions. Do you want a bench seat with a classic element or a three-cushion sofa, which makes for easier flipping and cleaning? While some sofa cushions are attached, many are not and will need to be flipped every few months, depending on use. Flipping the cushions is not just for hiding stains; it also keeps the fill even and equalizes the wear.

Style and Color

Your final consideration should be style and color. I know that we shop with our eyes, but finding a beautiful uncomfortable sofa will not do you any good. By understanding the size, shape, use, frame, and cushion style that you like, you will be able to narrow down your options and make the best decision. Many furniture manufacturers will allow you to choose between different sofa cushion fills, upholstery options, and materials, so going in with this information means you can alter a sofa to your liking.

Follow these steps to keep your clothes coming out fresh and clean! Many people aren't aware that regular cleaning of a washing machine is necessary to keep it running efficiently. "It's a washing machine; it cleans itself, right?" Unfortunately, this is not the case! Your washing machine constantly deals with bits of food, clothing fibers, hair, forgotten tissues and chapstick, and whatever else is stuck to (or left in) your clothes. On top of that, your washing machine's warm, wet world is an ideal environment for mold and mildew to grow. Add in detergent and hard water buildup in hard-to-reach areas well; you're starting to see the picture. Cleaning your washing machine is not difficult or time-consuming. All it takes is a few common household materials, and if you do this regularly, it will get easier every time. Cleaning a Front Loader Materials: Baking Soda White Vinegar Rag Toothbrush Step 1: The first step is to clean all the areas you can reach with a rag or toothbrush dipped in vinegar. This includes the door, the window, the seal, the inside of the drum, and all the nooks and crannies you can get to. Make sure that you use a soft fabric not to scratch the enamel or glass. For filthy areas, create a paste with the baking soda by mixing it with the vinegar in a small dish, or sprinkle it where needed. This will act as a mild abrasive and help remove stuck-on grime. The paste is handy when using the toothbrush to clean the rubber seal around the glass. Step 2: Fill the liquid detergent dispenser with 1 – 2 cups of vinegar. This will break down any hard water and detergent buildup while simultaneously disinfecting your machine. Set your device on the sanitize cycle (or the hottest cycle on your machine), the full-load setting, and run it empty. Step 3: When that cycle is finished, add 1/3 cup of baking soda to the drum. Just pour it right in and then run the machine on hot again. This will prevent any lingering odors and help break down any residual grime that the vinegar didn't wash away. You do not add the vinegar and baking soda in the same cycle because vinegar is an acid and baking soda a base, and they will neutralize each other. So it won't damage your machine, but it will reduce the cleaning benefits that each provides. Once these steps are clean, your machine is good to go. I recommend running this cleaning process once a month to ensure that your clothes are left smelling clean and fresh. Cleaning a Top Loader Cleaning a top loader is quicker than cleaning a front loader because the door is more out of the way. Also, because water is not sloshing against it while running a clothes cycle, it is less likely to accumulate the mold and grime that a front loader does. Other than that, the process is very similar. Materials: Baking Soda White Vinegar Rag Toothbrush Step 1: When cleaning a top loader, the first step is to fill your machine with hot water. To do this: Start a cycle and then interrupt it halfway through. Add 3 cups of vinegar to the basin and stir to mix it with the water. Let this mixture sit for one hour to give it time to break down any grime that is in the basin. Step 2: While you are waiting, dip your rag and toothbrush into the water and use this to clean the area around the door. If you need extra scrubbing power, you can create a paste with the baking soda or sprinkle it around. Make sure to keep the baking soda from spilling over into the drum, as the chemical properties of baking soda and vinegar will cancel out their cleaning ability. You can also use a spray bottle filled with vinegar. This helps reach gaskets deep into the detergent and bleach dispensers and the machine's exterior. If your machine has any removable parts, you can soak these in the vinegar bath while you clean the outside. Step 3: Run a complete cycle when the exterior has been cleaned, and the mixture has soaked for an hour. This will thoroughly clean the areas of the machine that you can't get to and rinse away the vinegar. Once finished, leave the door open for the inside to dry out. Steps For a Very Dirty Washing Machine Sometimes, vinegar and baking soda won't be strong enough to get your machine as clean as you want it. This might be the case if you hadn't washed your device before or moved into a new home and want to start fresh. Step 1: If this is the case, fill your washer with hot water and add a quart of bleach. Next, start the machine and let it run for one minute to mix things up, then open the top and let it soak for one hour. After it has soaked, close the lid and run your machine on a complete cycle. The device will drain the bleach and rinse any residue left behind. Once finished, you will repeat this cycle but with vinegar. Step 2: Fill your washer with hot water and add a quart of white vinegar to the water and into the bleach compartment. Let the machine run for a minute to agitate the mixture and then lift the lid and let it sit for an hour. When the hour is up, run a complete cycle, and your machine will be fresh and clean! Tips: When not using your washing machine, always leave the door open to dry out thoroughly. This will go a long way in preventing mildew and mold buildup and keep things smelling fresh. Never leave wet clothes in the washer! Instead, transfer them immediately into the dryer or hang them on a drying rack. " width="300" height="200" srcset="https://designandtrades.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/The-Best-Way-to-Clean-Your-Washing-Machine-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://designandtrades.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/The-Best-Way-to-Clean-Your-Washing-Machine-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https://designandtrades.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/The-Best-Way-to-Clean-Your-Washing-Machine-3.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />Materials:

Baking Soda
White Vinegar
Rag
Toothbrush

Step 1:

The first step is to clean all the areas you can reach with a rag or toothbrush dipped in vinegar.
Keep your shower doors clean with these simple tricks.

Excellent addition to a modern bathroom is glass shower doors that elevate elegance while keeping things feeling fresh. Rather than a billowing shower curtain, a glass shower door is sophisticated and timeless. But only if it stays clean!

A glass shower door magnetizes streaks, soap scum, mildew, and hard water mineral deposits. Because it’s impossible to hide anything, it’s essential to keep your glass door clean and clear. With a shower door, not only do you need to take care of the glass, but also the tracks. This will ensure that the door slides smoothly and quietly at all times.

Clean Your Shower Regularly

Water spots will appear every time you take a shower, and mold and mildew will have the opportunity to grow. Because your shower is a damp environment, keeping it free of grime will help hinder any bacterial growth.

Squeegee Power

The simplest way to keep your shower door streak-free is to purchase a shower squeegee. This can be hung on a suction cup hook next to the door for easy access. Then, when you are finished with your shower, wipe down your doors to keep hard-water deposits from building up. It also makes it easier to do deep cleaning later.

If you live with others, wipe down the shower doors every night after the last person has used the shower. This is also an opportune time to clean the shower floor, as the warm water has loosened things up. A magic eraser sponge is perfect for this task, as it does a great job without needing the help of cleaning products or toxic chemicals.

Air Circulation

Leave the shower door open to help with the air circulation when you are finished taking a shower. If the door stays shut, the moisture stays in, which creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew. With the door open, you allow the air to move throughout the space and quickly dry it out. If you do not have a ventilation fan in your bathroom, leave the window open for a few minutes after your shower. The fresh air will do wonders not only for the shower but also at keeping streaks from forming on the walls due to the moisture.

Deep Cleaning

Every once in a while, you will need to do a deeper cleaning. This isn’t a massive project, but having the right tools will help.

Spray Bottle
Baking Soda
Distilled White Vinegar
Dish Detergent
Sponge
Toothbrush
Microfiber cloth

An excellent DIY shower-door cleaner can be made by mixing distilled white vinegar and an equal amount of grease-cutting dish detergent into a spray bottle. Spray the front and back of the doors along with the walls and floor of your shower. Let it sit for 30 minutes, and then scrub with a sponge before rinsing it off. You can dry the shower door afterward with a microfiber cloth to remove any water spots. For hard-to-reach areas, you can use a toothbrush dipped in vinegar.

Note: The vinegar and dish soap method works well for cleaning, but if your shower has natural stone, the acidic vinegar could damage it. In that case, mix baking soda with dish detergent to create a fine paste. Next, use a non-scratch sponge to clean your shower door and rinse with warm water. The gentle abrasiveness of the baking soda will cut through any grime while eliminating the possibility of damaging your stone.

Using Lemon to Clean Your Shower Door

Another trick that involves baking soda is using a lemon to create a natural sudsy cleaner with a built-in sponge.

Cut a lemon in half and then push the cut side into a plate of baking soda. You will notice a sudsy foam cleaning away all the grime as you rub this on the door. The acid in the lemon reacts with the baking soda the same way vinegar does, but you also have a built-in sponge! For a delicious smelling after-treatment, rub your glass door with lemon oil, which will repel water and keep it from spotting after a shower.

Cleaning the Shower Door Tracks

If you don’t clean the shower door tracks for a while, you will notice that they do not slide easily and may start making squealing noises. This is because the shower tracks are a prime location for mold and mildew buildup, as water will pool in that area and stay there. Soap scum will also build up here, which can gunk up the wheels.

To clean your shower door tracks:
Grab an old toothbrush and some baking soda, and work your way around the metal frame. You can also use a paint scraper or razor blade to help remove any buildup where the glass meets the metal.
Hold the blade at a 45-degree angle to keep it from scratching the glass.
When you are finished, rinse the tracks with a detachable showerhead or a cup of warm water to reduce overflow spills.

Make Your Daily Shower Spray

A daily shower spray will go a long way in keeping your shower door clean and extending the need for deep cleaning. To make your cleaner, combine 1 cup of water, ½ cup of vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and some essential oil. Fill a small spray bottle with this mixture, and you’re ready to go. You can leave this bottle in the shower and use it to spray down the door and walls after you squeegee them. This will create a coat that repels water and makes the bathroom smell wonderful. *If you have a stone shower, omit the vinegar.

Taking care of a shower is an easy task as long as you do it daily. Wipe your shower door down with a squeegee after each shower and do a deep cleaning when you notice buildup. Your bathroom will look sleek, modern, and inviting with these daily routines.
